Reader’s Review: Starstruck

starstruckAfter four years of separation, Gwendolyn “Dough” Riley’s best friend, and long-distance boyfriend, is moving back to town! The only problem is that while Wish has gotten tall, handsome and charismatic, all Dough has gotten is fat.

Wish’s arrival changes Dough’s status at school from pariah to a fringe member of the It Crowd. While she enjoys her lost anonymity, Dough begins to wonder about Wish. It is almost like Wish is a different person; he seems somehow more distant and he is almost too beautiful. Wish is so bright and golden; it’s almost like looking at the sun.

Just as Gwendolyn begins to buy into this new version of her friend, the weirdo winter help her mother hired for the bakery-Christian- starts talking to Dough about the Luminati. Christian tells her stories of people who can control the stars to give themselves a better future. What’s worse is that he eventually accuses Wish of being a member of this cult! As much Dough doesn’t want to believe, let alone even listen, to Christian…. There IS something to his stories that begins to hit a little too close to home…..

Cyn Balog’s Starstruck is a slightly off-beat, enjoyable romance; it’s a little light on substance, but it’s got an interesting twist and an underlying message about finding and trusting yourself to do what’s right under any circumstance.
