Star Wars: Jedi Academy

“A long time ago in  galaxy far, far away… there was a boy named Roman Novachez … who was destined to attend Pilot Academy Middle School and become the GREATEST Star pilot in the GALAXY. Until everything went TOTALLY and COMPLETELY WRONG…” (1)  And so begins a funny trip across the galaxy from Tatooine to Corsucant with a kid who feels  unprepared for the adventure that is middle school.

Roman has been looking forward to following in his big brother’s footsteps and attending the galaxy’s renowned Pilot Academy Middle School where he can train to be a star fighter pilot.  But instead of being accepted to the Pilot Academy, Ro has been selected to attend the exclusive, secretive Jedi Academy.  Unsure why he’s been invited (most students start at the Academy as toddlers), Ro feels completely out of his element among the aliens, droids, enigmatic teachers, and light-sabar wielding bullies who can lift things with their minds.  When he makes a big mistake and upsets his friends and finds himself on the verge of flunking out of school, Roman can only hope that Master Yoda’s faith in him will be proved right before he’s sent back home to Tatooine in disgrace.

Cartoonist and author Jeffery Brown (Darth Vadar and Son and its sequel Vadar’s Little Princess) creates a hybrid comic book, diary, and scrapbook, all drawn and handwritten by Roman, that vividly captures the confusing transition to middle school.  Readers who love Star Wars will be particularly captivated by this different, interesting view into a famous world; those who can’t wait for the next Diary of a Wimpy Kid will feel right at home with Ro and his misadventures; and any kid struggling to fit in and make friends in the foreign world of middle school will find his experiences artfully captured here.
