Treasure Hunters

9 year old twins Bick and Beck have lived almost their whole lives at sea.  Along with their older sister Storm and big brother Tailspin Tommy, Bick & Beck and their parents sail around the world hunting for lost treasure, digging up archaeological curiosities, and living a life of adventure.  Homeschooled on the boat to “survive in the real world – without iPods, iPhones, iPads or Papa John’s Pizza” (23) the Kidd kids can cook, man a sixty three foot sailing ship on their own, navigate by the stars and survive marauding pirates, shark attacks, and unscrupulous adults chasing them from one treasure trove to another.

Not long after their mother went missing in Cyprus, the Kidd family encounters a hurricane in the middle of the Caribbean Sea that almost capsizes their home, The Lost.  While the kids and The Lost make it through the storm, their dad wasn’t so lucky.  With a battered ship, no parents, no money, and only their own stubborn, steely resolve, the four Kidds decide to make port, repair the ship, and continue the family business – treasure hunting – on their own.  Unfortunately, things are a little more complicated than they’d first anticipated since they seem to be caught up in a deadly race against time to discover what priceless object their father was searching for, to determine whom they can trust, and to save their own lives in one dangerous situation after another.

James Patterson and Chris Grabenstein collaborate again to launch a new, action-packed illustrated series for upper elementary readers, Treasure Hunters.  Bick narrates the Kidd kids’ high-stakes, fast-paced adventures with a funny, somewhat sarcastic tone that is as entertaining as it is captivating.  His sister Beck’s drawings (illustrator Juliana Neufeld) are on almost every page and add a dynamic visual element that break up the short chapters into bite-sized mini action sequences.  The clues to the many mysteries are littered throughout, pointing readers to both false and true conclusions as Bick, Beck, Storm and Tommy outwit their enemies, stay true to each other, and have the first of many totes awesome adventures.
