The Hollow

thehollowWhen Abbey’s best friend Kristen vanishes at the bridge near Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, she refuses to accept that Kristen is dead. As rumors fly that her death was no accident, Abbey goes through the motions of grief, including attending her best friend’s funeral, where she meets Caspian, a mysterious and handsome stranger that keeps popping into her life. As the story unfolds, Abbey quickly realizes that the truth can be a fickle friend, challenging everything she thought she knew about her best friend, the boy she is quickly falling for, and even herself.

One of the most unique features of Jessica Verday’s The Hollow is the way Verday weaves elements of Washington Irving’s legend into her story. The story is set in the town of Sleepy Hollow, and each chapter opens with a quote from Irving’s Legend. Both Abbey and Kristen knew it by heart, and they are uniquely connected to their hometown and the legend it famously inspired. As Abbey investigates her friend’s disappearance and falls for Caspian in the process, the town and its famous legend knit their way into the story in a unique and surprising way.

The Hollow is an interesting read, filled with elements of mystery, suspense, and romance. Personally, I felt that the story was unfinished, a sentiment that must have been shared by the author, who is currently working on the continuation to Abbey and Caspian’s story . The Hollow comes out in September 2009, but if you want a sneak preview, you can read the first chapter at www.jessicaverday.com!
